Name: Jeremiah Hickory

Nickname/Alias: Hicks

Age: Fifty-ish

Gender: Male

Rank/Occupation: Able Seaman

Appearance: Hicks looks basically like an old, gnarled, weather-beaten tree. His torso is thick and trunk-like and he holds himself very upright, almost a bit stiffly. His facial features are hard to make out under a mass of wrinkles and a huge white beard that completely obscures the lower part of his face. Sun, wind, rain and hard work have etched their lines into that face, but his small, watery eyes are alert and vivid. His nose appears to have been broken several times and he may or may not be a bit deaf. It seems to depend on person and request.

Personality: Hicks is a gruff bear of a man who hides his intelligence underneath his rough appearance. He's not that talkative and his language is coarse, which some people mistake for daftness. They're often surprised to find out that he can be quick-witted in his responses. Those people won't get anything from him, no matter what their station. He's had to endure quite a bit of punishment for this obstinacy of his. However, if he likes someone, he can be surprisingly cooperative and almost friendly. He's fast to catch on at new tasks and isn't fazed by nearly anything.

Bio: Poor parents and a lot of siblings, the story that so many Navy sailors can tell. From as far back as he can remember, Hicks had to work to contribute to his parents meager income. He learned quickly that there was no-one he could rely on more than himself. Though his parents did not hit him too often, there wasn't much time or space for such things as love, family bonds or care for each other. Each of the Hickory siblings learned soon enough to fend for themselves.

Nevertheless, Hicks had a mind of his own. He knew all too well that society didn't have much in store for him and that his world was limited. But while he couldn't do much about the first, he didn't have to leave it at that for the latter. And the best way to see as much as possible of the world was by ship. And so Hicks enlisted with a ship bound for the new world as soon as they would have him. He learned the sea-faring trade from the bottom up and survived against all the odds that exploring uncharted lands brought with it. Finally fed up with almost being consumed by hunger or illness and being chased by irate natives, he finally settled with the Navy. The remote and exotic setting of the West Indies suits him just fine.

Birthplace: Right in the middle of the West Midlands, England

Family: Father: Robert Hickory, living circumstances unknown, mother: Elizabeth Hickory, née Jameson, living circumstances unknown, far too many brothers and sisters to be named here. Hicks himself has forgotten most of their names.

Skills: A skilled and experienced sailor with a quick mind and more knowledge about seafaring than he lets on. There's almost nothing that can unsettle him, nothing that he hasn't seen or experienced yet. He's also tougher than coffin nails.

Weaknesses: Stubborn to a fault, Hicks has his own head and his superiors don't like that too much. He's had to bear the consequences more often than he can count - as much as he can count. He also doesn't have an ounce of ambition inside of him, otherwise he could have made it to boatswain's mate. Then again, given his aversion to too much authority, probably not.

Theme Song: Show me the way to go home

Anything Else: Nope.
