NPC Bio
Name: Duarte Vigo e Fontan
Nickname/Alias: Rey
Age: 32
Gender: male
Rank/Occupation: Main pilot (Sailing master) aboard the Spanish ship
Madre de DiosAppearance: Dark hair, slightly curly, blue eyes, rather sturdy built, not too tall, not shaving much while at sea, so he has a beard and a moustache. He pays attention to clothes only when ashore, willing ot impress women.
Personality: Duarte is a simple man, liking a meal and a good wine on the table and a friend to share it with, a good song and bones tired by work. He hates laziness, arrogance, and those who have no sense of duty, the irresponsible seamen who try to give their portion of the work to others. He is loyal first and foremost to the ship, the crew and the country. He has a strong sense of duty, and he respects people who are the same. Those who cannot earn his respect will also never gain his allegiance.
He hates nobility, because he has seen noble captains and lieutenants destroying ships with their stupidity and ignorance. He also believes that everything must be earned through hard work, therefore disdaining thieves and beggars for this reason.
He is good with his words, which helps both with superiors and with lifting spirits of his crewmates… and with conquering women too.
Bio: Born in Freixeiro, a small village at sea in Galicia, as the eldest son in the school teacher’s family. This was why he learnt to read and write before going to school, and his father got preoccupied with his studies, hoping that Duarte would follow in his profession. But everything ended when he was thirteen and his parents died in an epidemy, together with one of his sisters, leaving him and his two younger siblings alone in the world. If the younger ones got taken care by various relatives, he was old enough to find himself work. And as he didn’t want to be apprentice to a shop-keeper or craftsman, he preferred to go to sea. It was a Navy ship which took him, and he liked the life at sea.
Noticing that he was literate and also he liked drawing, a master’s mate put him to copy some maps, and he did an accurate job. Since then, the man, a Catalan, Mateu, took care to teach him about navigation too.
He got his nickname from his crewmates, by comparison with the British King Edward… well, one of them because he knows there have been several with this name. But he doesn’t accept to be called Rey by anyone, even if he answers that some day he’ll be the king of pilots, the king of seas.
Anything Else: Good navigator and sailor in general, good with swords and firearms.
