Name: Christian Hardwick
Nickname/Alias: None. He doesn't like to be called "Chris".
Age: 28
Gender: male
Rank/Occupation: master's mate
Appearance: Tall (about 6'3"), thin but strong. He's moderately tanned. His hair is very light blonde, almost white, his eyebrows are a bit darker. It's long and he wears it braided. Wigs are out of question, he hates them. He's got blueish-gray eyes. Usually dresses in blue or black and prefers practical clothes over fashionable ones. He's got a scar from a swordcut, beginning on the forehead and continuing backwards, covered by his hair.
Personality: A brave man with a sarcastic sense of humour. He likes to read all sort of things, from the Bible to banned, scandalous French contemporary books. He believes in God but is a bit of a freethinker who likes to discuss philosophy and religion. A bit closed type, but once he warms up he's friendly. He's not a gentleman by birth but proud, so sometimes he has problems with aristocrats who are too full of themselves.
Bio: Born as a bastard, of a poor clerk and a flower seller who sort of lived together. He was christened only because Auntie Ophelia took him to a priest. His mother died of consumption when he was around two so he doesn't remember her, he grew up in his aunt's house. His father went mad with his boring job, poverty and constant humiliation from his boss, and began to murder his superiors. Nobody would think a silent, good-mannered man like him would do that, but sometimes this type is more dangerous than the thunder and cursing type of man. Not to mention his father's late mother ended in Bedlam, so it was probably coded. He succeeded four times before he was caught and hanged. Probably got a ballad common people sang for a while, this being London.
Christian didn't see a big future before himself as a bastard and son of a condemned murderer, so he volunteered the Navy at the age of 13. He made from ship's boy to able seaman till the time he was 20. A skilled young man, he found a joy in this hard life.
Meanwhile he met a Master who discovered his mathematic skills - he learned a lot from his father back then when the ol' man was normal - and he taught the boy because he was short one mate. Christian learned navigation well over the years, and around 25 he was officially made a master's mate, rather than just "helping when needed". It also affected his payment in a good direction. He loves this job and never stops to learn more and more about the sea and the stars.
When on shore leave, he returns to his aunt whom he loves as a mother. She lives in Portsmouth now.
No ladies in his life - he sees no point in marrying and having an abandoned wife who'd surely find comfort somewhere. There might be other reasons, but he doesn't know yet.
At the end of 1740, his ship was sent to the Caribbeans. Here he got assigned to Steadfast - the reason being the old Master who taught him died, and the captain of HMS Galathea, a new officer and an aristocrat with not too much brain, didn't like his background, even less that he got so high despite it, so he thought maybe a pirate-hunter would be a better place for "such plebeian elements".
Birthplace: London
Family:
Father: George Hardwick (deceased)
Mother: Sigrún Hardwick, née Nilsson (deceased)
Aunt: Ophelia Ramsey, née Hardwick (widowed)
Skills: Good in swordfight and with guns. Smart and honourable despite his heritage. He didn't forget where he came from though.
Weaknesses: Afraid of heights. Although he can go up if necessary, he's still not comfortable with it. Shameful family background. He has a secret fear that he might turn mad one day like his father and grandmother, although it doesn't seem too likely at this point, but it's in the blood and he wants to avoid it.
Theme Song: "No Place Like London" would do nicely.
Anything Else: I'd like to give him a love interest (he really needs it), so if someone thinks their character would find them attractive, just tell. :)
