“Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus”The Founding of Hogwarts Over a thousand years ago, four accomplished witches and wizards (Godric Gryffindor; Helga Hufflepuff; Rowena Ravenclaw; and Salazar Slytherin) were united by a common goal: to open a school of witchcraft and wizardry to train young witches and wizards in the magical arts. Together, the founders, called the Hogwarts Four, built Hogwarts Castle far from the prying eyes of Muggles during a dangerous time of magical persecution. Each of the founders, for which each House is named after, hand picked the students they wished to teach for many years. Differences between Gryffindor and Slytherin eventually led to Slytherin leaving the school and Gryffindor instituting a new way of choosing students: the Sorting Hat. Over time, the management of the school has evolved. Any student, regardless of background, race or blood status, may attend Hogwarts. The Sorting Hat, which is placed on the head of new students in the Sorting Ceremony, now announces to the school at large which House the Student has the greatest affinity for, judging by the characteristics that the Hogwarts Four used when selecting their pupils. The school is no longer run by four or three leaders, but a single Headmaster or Headmistress. The subjects of magic that are now taught have branched out greatly, and OWLs and NEWTS have been instituted to ensure that every student of Hogwarts has learned what they need to become a fully trained witch or wizard. Hogwarts Mission The goal of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is to teach young witches and wizards of all backgrounds and blood status how to effectively control and use their magic in hopes of becoming shining citizens of the Wizarding and/or Muggle communities. Staff Directory Headmaster: Gowan Ethelinge Deputy Headmaster: Patricia Coleman Head of Gryffindor House: Lillith Truman Head of Hufflepuff House: Head of Ravenclaw House: Head of Slytherin House: Lukyan Volkov Academics - Classes are not mandatory. They are, however, a great way to receive House Points and to join in on an RP.
- In order to attend a class, post in the class sign-up thread. This is for the convenience of the Professor; he or she can rearrange their class session far better if they know who is on the roster.
- Typically, a short lecture may be given, homework may be assigned, a class assignment could be mandatory. All of this is up to the professor.
- Students may interact with each other and the professor. They should keep in mind that if caught passing notes, they may be reprimanded.
Extra Curricular Activities - To join an extra curricular activity, the Student must fill out the form for the activity he or she would like to participate in.
- Once accepted, periodic meetings may take place, started by the head of the activity, or by other members if the head is unavailable, to RP the club or sport.
- Students may start a club or sport of their own by following the appropriate guidelines.
Annual Events - Events are voluntary. No Student is forced to go.
- Any Event hosted within the school is one that a student may be banned from.
- All Students should dress appropriately for the Event in question. Not doing so may cause the Student to be turned away by a Hogwarts Staff member.
- The point of an Event is to get Students and Staff from all Houses together to socialize and have fun.
House Points - Any Hogwarts Staff member may grant or deduct House Points.
- In order for the House Points to be tallied, the Staff member must approach the Hourglass and announce how many points were given or taken, the Student to cause this, and the reason for it.
- House Points may be won by doing good deeds, entering and winning contests and sports hosted as Events (such as Quidditch), and attending and doing well in classes.
- At the end of the year, the House with the most Points shall have a feast in their honor. Until the next House Winner has been selected, all Events shall be decorated primarily in that House’s colors. The winning House also receives the Cup House, which is displayed in the Trophy Room on the Third Floor.
Dining Services - All meals are to be eaten in the Great Hall. Meals are served three times a day: early morning, noon, and evening. Students and Staff may eat at these times or eat nothing at all. The only exception to this rule are those who are in the School’s Infirmary and cannot make it to the Great Hall.
- The Great Hall is divided into five tables. The Staff table is on a dais and overlooks the four House Tables. Typically, the Staff eat at the Staff table, and each Student eats at his or her respective House table.
- When meals are ready, food will magically appear on the platters. Students and Staff may help themselves to the portions they choose to eat, and the same with drinks. When serving plates and platters begin to look scarce, they will automatically refill. No alcoholic beverages are served with meals.
- No Student is permitted to enter the Kitchens or harass the House Elves.
Student Conduct Student-Student Relations - Students shall always act respectful to one another.
- Food fights in the Great Hall are not tolerated.
- Students are expected to act with good manners and maturity.
- Personal displays of affection (PDA) are not to be done in public.
- Fighting will not be acceptable unless you are in a Wizard Dual club and under Staff supervision.
- Alcohol, smoking, and drugs of any sort is strictly prohibited. If a Staff member were to find any of these things on a Student’s person or among their possessions, the Student shall be up for possible expulsion.
Student-Staff Relations - Students shall always show Staff respect. They are not forced to like the Staff, only show them their due respect.
- Using magic on a Staff member is not acceptable. This may warrant expulsion.
- Romantic relationships of any kind are not tolerated. Doing so can lead to expulsion for the Student and sacking of the Staff member.
- All relationships between Students and Staff shall be on a strictly professional level.
Use of Magic - The only time use of magic is permitted is in the classroom under a professor’s supervision, practicing as homework in Common Rooms or an empty classroom, and for clubs requiring the use of magic with a Staff member present.
- Magic is strictly forbidden in the corridors.
- Jinxing or otherwise using magic against another Student or Staff member is not acceptable.
- Wizard Duels are only permitted within the boundaries of the Wizard Duel club with an adult Hogwarts Staff member present to mediate.
- Experiments using magic are not to be done. They are dangerous and can result in severe injury.
Punishments - If any Student breaks a rule in this nifty little handbook, then they are subject to be punished. Punishments may include a detention, suspension of extra curricular activities (such as Quidditch, or a club), banning from social events or visiting Hogsmeade, and the deduction of House Points. What the punishment will be depends on the severity of the rule broken and the Hogwarts Staff member who assigned the punishment.
- House Point deductions are by far the most common. The Staff member must verbally say which House lost how many points to the student and also must report it to the House Hourglass. Otherwise, House Points will not be updated.
- Detentions are typically attended in the classroom of the Staff member who assigned it. The student may be required to write an essay, sit in a desk and do nothing, or complete tasks or chores for the Staff member.
- Suspension of extra curricular activities or Hogsmeade visitation is usually reserved for a third major offense. The first time a suspension is given, it is typically for a single session or for the duration of the Quarter (there are three – fall quarter, winter quarter, and spring quarter) though in severe cases they can be permanently banned from extra curricular activities.
- The most severe of the punishments is banishment of social events and Hogsmeade visitation for the year. The only thing worse than this is expulsion. Any RPs involving expulsion must be discussed with an Admin beforehand.
- The Staff member may not force the Student to do anything dangerous as punishment, nor keep the Student past curfew.
- If a Student thinks that any one punishment assigned to him or her is unfair or extreme, he or she may go their Head of House with a complaint. If the HoH agrees, the punishment may be lessened.
- If given a detention, the Student MUST attend! It is nothing personal; it’s all in good fun, for the sake of the RP.
Dormitories & Common Rooms - There is a curfew for all Students. This means that by the following stated time, the Student must be inside their Common Room. First, Second and Third years have until 10pm; Fourth and Fifth years until 11pm; and Sixth and Seventh years by 12pm.
- All students shall be in their respective Dormitories by 12:30pm.
- Female students may be permitted to visit fellow male Housemates in their dorms. However, males are strictly prohibited from doing the same in female dorms; whenever one tries, the floor will automatically level out into a slide, forcing the imposing male to return to the entrance.
Grounds - No Students should be on the Castle Grounds after sunset.
- Nathan’s Hut is off limits to students, officially. Unofficially, it is a popular place for couples to go when they are in need of privacy. A small spell, such as Alohomora, to unlock the door of this abandoned hut is all that is needed.
- Students should refrain from terrorizing any beings that live within the Lake.
- Swimming in the Lake after dark is strictly prohibited.
- Do not tease the Whomping Willow. Smarter witches and wizards have lost an eye or limb from doing so before.
- The Forbidden Forest is forbidden. There are no exceptions.
- Opposite teams of Quidditch should give each other privacy when practicing. It is distracting, unethical, and immoral to sabotage the other team by sitting in on them.
- Do not climb or try to open Hogwarts Gates. They are spelled with powerful magic; they will not open and will not allow you to cross. The metal will turn as vines and hold you in place on the Gate if you do so; only a Hogwarts Staff member can free anyone held in this compromising position.
Hogsmeade Visitation - All rules regarding conduct at Hogwarts apply to Hogsmeade.
- Only third years are permitted to attend Hogsmeade, and only if they bring with them a signed permission slip. No permission slip, no entrance.
- Hogsmeade Visitation is permitted only during the allotted weekends.
- All hidden entrances to Hogsmeade from Hogwarts have been closed. The only way to get there is by using the Room of Requirement.
Final Note - This entire post was created to help along students and staff with RPs.
- Rules are meant to be broken, and we fully expect most of them to have done so. Keep in mind that the only rule here that we strictly reinforce is the use of Forbidden Curses – don’t use them, even in RP! You can threaten to use them, you can make like you’re going to, but NEVER finish the curse. It’s enough to have the student expelled; if you want your character expelled this way, please contact an Admin beforehand and discuss it.
