--|Prologue|--

Prince Rogir, now the Free Magic Sorcerer and Greater Dead creature Kerrigor, has slain the Queen. The First Great Charter is corrupted, and the Kingdom is ready to fall. Kerrigor was banished into Death by the Abhorsen Aurenus, but it is a temporary binding and cannot heal the dark stain of corrupted magic. In the great city of Belisaere, the counselor Firaoc is given the title of Regent of the Old Kingdom, but he inherits shrinking sovereignty of a shattered realm.

Necromancers and Free Magic Sorcerers are appearing in the far reaches of the Old Kingdom, drawn by the corruption of the Charter and the deterioration of royal authority. They raise Dead and prey on villages to keep their servants in Life, biding their time in a quest for power and magic. In their wake is bloodshed and destruction, left for the eyes of the Royal Guard when they arrive, and find the necromancer vanished. Darkness spreads in every corner of the realm like infection from a wound.

It is twenty years after the death of the Queen, and the land is now set beneath shadow. Danger lies in every path and every city, and each day of tenuous peace threatens to be broken. The fate of the realm is uncertain, and the future is full of darkness and Death. Those of the Old Kingdom must try to find their own peace and courage in the midst of so much evil.
