No Plans Yet for 'The Simpsons' Film Sequel

The 19th season of The Simpsons is just two weeks away, and word is the opening scene will have Bart Simpson writing this intriguing phase over and over again on the classroom blackboard: “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.”

While this, along with the fact that the voice cast of The Simpsons are signed to do three movies of the animated series, has led many to think that a sequel is underway, showrunner and executive producer Al Jean told the New York Post that at present, they are not planning a sequel to the highly successful The Simpsons Movie, which has grossed more than $175 million in the United States alone.

"We would only do a sequel if we believed it was a movie that had to be made, just like we did with the first one," Jean said. "We wouldn't want to do it just because the first one was successful, or because we wanted to make money off of a movie. We'd only do it if we had a script that we thought was great [and] there's no script at this point."

He also told the New York Post that Bart's blackboard scribbles on the upcoming season premiere of The Simpsons is only a teaser, and that producers are, at this time, focusing their energy on the show's new season, which already boasts of a stellar guest-star lineup.

Among the big names slated to appear on the 19th season of The Simpsons are Lionel Ritchie, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Placido Domingo, Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), Weird Al Yankovic, Topher Grace (That ‘70s Show), Steve Buschemi and Jack Black. Kelsey Grammer will also be returning to voice Sideshow Bob, whose father and brother will be voiced by Grammer's former Frasier co-stars, John Mahoney and David Hyde Pierce.

The Simpsons returns with new episodes on Sunday, September 23, at 8/7c on FOX.
