Help me, Fishy! No one is posting with me!

As this seems to be a common problem, and one I’ve been wanting to address for a while now, I shall do so here.
  • A lot of people have trouble jumping into the action as “cliques” tend to develop. Just because your character is highly attached to another doesn’t mean that they can’t interact with anyone else! Make an open thread occasionally and see who steps in! Who knows, you may find your character a new best friend or something similarly interesting! If you only ever RP with one person with that character (and I am guilty of this as well at times), you will grow dependent on the other character’s presence and possibly start to lose interest when they are not around. This isn’t fun. Try to broaden your character’s horizons and have them meet new people. After all, in a Weyr they wouldn’t only interact with ONE person and one person alone!

  • Are your posts abnormally short (1-3 sentences long) and/or very unspecific? People will be more apt to join you in RP if your posts are easily readable and of a decent length. Try typing your posts in Word and spell-checking them for maximum readability. I usually pre-type my posts in Word and just copy/paste. Not only does this cut down on typos and bad grammar and improper punctuation, it lessens the chance of the board eating my post by accident.

  • On the opposite end of the spectrum, is your post in your open thread TOO long? Generally if it’s an “everyone is welcome” thread and not directed at anyone in particular, people will be rather intimidated by huge, novel-length posts to start with. This isn’t always the case, many people see long, detailed posts as the sign of a good writer and will be more eager to RP with you in the future but hopping into a novel thread with your own paltry paragraph or two makes some people feel inadequate.

  • Is making open threads not working for you? There are plenty of threads that are already open all over the place; you just have to keep your eyes open. Try RPing with someone you haven’t gotten the chance to yet! They will be very appreciative of you joining their threads and getting to know them. This is how friends are made and where the real fun begins. Some of the coolest RPers I know, I met by them randomly hopping into my threads or vice versa. Take a chance!

  • CHECK IN THE CBOX! There are usually many people around willing to RP with you! All you have to do is ask! Friendships are formed by social interaction and that is one of the most addicting aspects of online RP. If you are friendly and chat with people, they will be more likely to want to RP with you.

  • Is you character too perfect? This is a no-no. A “perfect” or flawless character is unappealing. Think about it, in real life, who are the people that are most fun to be around? Is it the seemingly flawless beautiful people who can do no wrong or the interesting quirky ones that actually have a personality? People are turned off by perfection in character, plain and simple.

  • Stir up some trouble! Do something interesting! Simply having your character just sitting there and staring off into space is not good incentive for people to join. Interaction with the surrounding environment and people is key. Inter-action. Instead of sitting still and speaking monotone or staring blankly, have them DOING something. Is your character pacing back and forth? Does he/she sit still? Describe some facial expressions or give us some insight into their thoughts! Interesting and interactive characters are fun! Toss in a little chaos here and there to spice things up!

  • Your character doesn’t have to be nice to everyone he/she meets. As in real life, there will be people he/she dislikes and doesn’t get along with. This, coincidently, can lead to some seriously fun RP! Simply having a character who has NEVER gotten mad at everyone/gets along with everyone will get boring after a while! Drama, drama, drama! Drama in the right doses makes for excellent, interesting RP and fun on all sides!
And I will be adding more to this as I think of it. Have fun out there!
