to be honest, rhett didn't know why he was even here. first, he had just come back from a lengthy suspension and he was banned from any school-related activities. not to mention, his mother had grounded him until the end of time for the crime he had committed. but since this spring break vacation was being funded by mtv canterbury tales and not ellison academy, rhett was able to come and hang out by the pool and the beach with his mates. the seventeen year old boy actually hated the reality show he had (for some reason) agreed to be apart of. it was one of the key factors that helped to ruin his life. rhett thought he was being sneaky, but after the cameras caught him making out with his teacher after school one day, he realized he probably should have been more careful. this little slip-up nearly cost him his education, but more importantly, it got his true love fired. she hadn't even spoken to him since the two were caught, and he was in desperate need of some loving from her. she wouldn't answer his calls or texts, and he had no idea where in the hell she lived, so he couldn't even go and see her. he was a depressed teenage boy.rhett needed to find a way to get all of the sadness, depression, and anxiety out of his mind. he had nearly lost hope on this trip until his ex-step brother robbie had managed to scrape up some lsd in the forbidden territories of nassau. with a small baggy of white tablets in his hand, the boy had run off in an attempt to find someone to go on a fun little trip with. robbie was no where to be found, and anybody else he knew wouldn't have done it with him. rhett had nearly given up when he saw a familiar face sitting in the hotel lobby and looking incredibly bored. with a grin, rhett had asked lenny gates to come out poolside with him. the boy had reluctantly agreed, and allowed rhett to drag him out to the cabanas. the senior handed the junior a pill and swallowed his own graciously. it had gotten pretty dark out and the lights around the cabanas were all lit up. it had been a short while before the effects of the drug started to kick in, and rhett was seeing stars. then all of a sudden, he was seeing bright swirling colors and his face lit up with pure elation. rhett loved this, he really did, and he could feel himself slowly starting to forget why he didn't even want to come on this trip.“don't you just love this fucking song?” rhett asked gleefully, crossing his legs indian-style and grinning over to lenny. in reality, there really was no music playing. “it feels like angels are surrounding us!” he exclaimed, thrusting his hands into the air and waving them around maniacally. his cheeks burned bright red and his heart was racing a million miles a minute, but rhett didn't care. “lenny…how you feeling, man? isn't this great?” in one quick movement, rhett had fallen back against the lounge chair he was sitting on in the cabana and sprawled himself out across it. “i love this goddamn song.”

what the hell was he doing here? lenny realized that he should have asked himself that question before he had agreed to come out here with rhett. wondering now that he was out here was a little bit late. this was probably one hundred percent his fault- no, it definitely was. this is what happened when he ran out of things to do and who did that in the bahamas anyways?

lenny had to admit that the concept of drugs had never been particularly appealing to him. he just had never understood the allure of getting into another dimension or however the hell people were describing it today. he got loopy enough when he had a little bit too much to drink, without the additional effects of drugs. besides, lenny was usually in the position of designated driver, or glorified babysitter, depending on what view of it that you wanted to take, and didn't really ever have the time or means to try anything like this. but he hadn't really had anything to do tonight, at least nothing of importance. and it was spring break- the second-to-last one that he'd have in high school. so his brain had somehow rationalized the concept of doing lsd with rhett by arguing that it may as well have been now or never. besides, rhett looked so excited when he'd asked that lenny hadn't had the heart to turn him down.

so that was how he found himself sitting in a lounge chair by the pool of the resort where they were staying, undoubtedly being watched by more than one camera waiting to see exactly how deeply he was going to step in it this time, staring at the little white pill in his hand. really, this tiny little thing was supposed to do any sort of damage? and yet… he'd seen proof first hand. with a slight sigh and a thought of here goes nothing, lenny swallowed it and waited for whatever magic was supposed to happen to happen.

it didn't take very long before lenny was seeing colors. this was weird. this was really weird. he saw color more than normal people- it was a consequence of having synesthesia. he saw colors every time he tried to read anything, numbers or letters. but this was different. they were everywhere in the space around him, just sort of milling around. this was really… trippy. when rhett opened his mouth though, that's when it got even crazier.

lenny tried to focus on what rhett was saying- something about a song, was there music playing?- but as soon as he started talking, it was like purple was pouring out of his mouth. lavenders and royal purples with lighter colors corresponding to his higher pitches in tone. lenny had seen a little bit of color associated with sounds before but it was really rare. piano high c's had a green color and he saw light streaks of red whenever he heard a police siren. but this was just a stream of color. he didn't know if it was the synesthesia, the drugs or a mixture of the two but he didn't really know what to say. "what son…song?"

lenny slapped his hand over his mouth. as soon as he'd started talking, his vision had been filled with a gorgeous yellow shade of sunlight. he had SUNLIGHT. coming out of his mouth. before he knew what he was doing, he was laughing, sunlight and sunflowers coming out of his mouth in beautiful bursts of yellow. "oh my god, i'm great. this is great. this is fantastic. you're talking in purple. in purple, man!"

lenny leaned back in his own chair, trying to listen to rhett's angels while watching the fireworks blasting all around in the sky. whoa, there were fireworks? where did those come from?

rhett crossed his hands behind his head and stared off into the dark blue horizon. the colors were still floating all around him, but suddenly the sky started rippling and making waves like the ocean. the colors had morphed into the sky and started floating across the ripples like a beautiful sea of rainbows. rhett gasped in amazement and sat up straight, his mouth wide open. he couldn't even concentrate on his friend sitting beside him in the lounge chair. he absolutely refused to take his eyes off of the purely astonishing sight in front of him. the heavenly angelic music playing and this image was incredible. he felt like he was…well, he felt like he was on acid, or at least in heaven. everything was perfectly perfect up until he realized that this couldn't possibly be happening. with a frown, he cocked his body to the side and formed a tripod so he could view it all upside down. the sky turning into a rainbow sea? no way. he had to be upside down. the ocean was supposed to be on the bottom of the earth and the sky was at the top. maybe if he just got himself to be positioned correctly, he'd be okay…“purple? i'm not talking purple!” rhett scoffed in confusion, turning his head a little ways to try to see lenny. irregardless, the blonde boy let out a large puff of air to see it for himself. still, there was no purple in sight and he frowned. his arms were starting to wobble from the pressure he was putting on it to remain upside down and his face was turning bright red from all of the blood rushing to his head. “lenny! which way is up, man? which way is up? am i sitting the right way?” he asked in desperation. eventually, his arms gave out and his body dropped back against the lounge chair, landing fairly hard on his stomach. rhett let out a groan and closed his eyes. wonderful bursts of color were exploding inside of his eyelids and he smiled happily. it was almost like a little mini fireworks finale happening in his own mind. as his thoughts (and his heart) raced at the speed of light, images of his teacher flashed through his brain and rhett grinned. “l-lenny. lenny! you ever been in love?” opening his eyes, the boy heaved himself up from the lounge chair and glanced over to the brunette who seemed to be lost in his own little world. “lenny! you ever been in love?” rhett repeated.rhett neared the other boys chair and crawled on top of it, adjusting himself so that half of his butt was sitting on lenny's lap and the other was hanging over the edge of the chair. with one hand holding onto the arm on the other side of lenny's body, he leaned into the boy and let out a sigh of relief. “t-tell me a story, lenny. tell me a story.” just looking at lenny, he could see his eyes were dilated and he knew his probably were as well. “a love story. with a happy ending.” rhett urged, shaking lenny's arm just a little bit for emphasis. “i want a happy ending.” there was an aching in rhett's chest, but he chose to ignore it. he felt too damn good to worry about the pain and sorrow he felt on the inside.

lenny wasn't sure when the world had started to be made of swirling lights that seemed to be rippling around but he wished that somebody had told him about this change earlier because it was certainly a nice one. and the chair he was sitting in… it was like a marshmallow. was it a marshmallow? it was soft enough to be. a giant marshmallow. huh. lenny poked the cushion experimentally, unsure if he trusted himself right now, logical thought flirting with all of the illogical wisps of ideas floating around, bouncing off the insides of his skull. he watched rhett contort his body into various positions, completely nonplussed. was he missing something? was the world actually supposed to be upside down? was he suddenly upside down? why was the world so weird all of a sudden? had somebody reversed gravity? he began to mimic the other boy's actions, turning his head in various directions as rhett spoke again.

"yes, you are!" lenny pointed toward rhett's face, where he thought very clear evidence of the fact that the other boy was most definitely speaking in purple was present. there were very distinct shades of purple floating around. maybe they weren't coming out of rhett's mouth directly, but they were definitely correlated with his speaking. lenny wouldn't have been positive about much in his current state but he was certain that the purple was because rhett was talking, just like the yellow was coming from himself. why couldn't the other boy see it? "don't you see it? the purple, man! and i think that way is up," lenny added, pointing toward the pool beside them, "because that's where the purple is moving and it's always moving toward the sky!"

lenny watched rhett fall, very thankful that the seats were marshmallows because otherwise that must have really hurt. but marshmallows were squishy. they were also white, but that color seemed to have vacated his color schema completely to be replaced by fireworks of gold and blue and red and color. he was startled when rhett was suddenly in his lap asking something about love and stories and what the hell was he going on about? he seemed to have lost all ability to function cognitively. but rhett was asking about love and come on, he was an expert in love. somewhere in the back of his mind, lenny knew that rhett had gotten in trouble recently for something but he didn't really know what.

rhett was really heavy. that left lenny with two options. he could either push the other boy off his chair or he could just find a comfortable position. because the floor was definitely not marshmallows, lenny decided to just go with it. he shifted slightly and rested his free arm on rhett's shoulder, leaning lightly onto the boy in his lap. not really caring who was watching or listening or what they would think, not the least reason of which was because he didn't actually have the capacity to form that clear of thought, lenny nodded vigorously. "i've been in love. or, i think i have. maybe. i've been in love with the most beautiful person on earth with beautiful brown hair and skin like the moon. the moon!"

lenny flopped back in his chair, staring at the sky. of course. he'd been in love. he loved diana. duh. why else would he have been stupid enough to try to talk to her? he could tell that story. but that story was boring. nothing happened in it. lenny ruffled rhett's hair, grinning. "okay, i have a story." his sister used to watch lots of movies with happy endings. he could tell one of those stories. but he couldn't remember any very well. that's okay. he could make one up. pointing at the sky, hands waving and pointing at things that he wasn't sure actually existed. "okay so once there was this really awesome guy and he…" he what? what happened next? he didn't know any good stories- his life was boring. lenny pondered for a moment, scratching his head. "and he had a happy ending? i dunno, man! what kind of happy ending do you want?"

okay, now rhett was confused. where in the hell was this purple lenny was seeing? the boy looked every which way and he still couldn't seem to see it. he was a little bit disappointed because he wanted to be able to see what lenny could see. he liked purple too, he would've loved to experience it the way his mate was. rhett began to wave his hands around in the air, trying to whip up a cloud of purple, but to no avail. instead, he only seemed to confuse himself as the sight of his hands moving around as fast as they were had brought on streaks of slow motion movement. was he moving in slow motion? he couldn't have been. rhett was waving his hands too fast. or maybe that was the science of it — he was moving so fast that it had started to become slow. was that even science? or maybe it was art, based upon all of the colors that were floating around. rhett wasn't the brightest crayon in the box, but the pure magic of all of this was making him starstruck. he felt like he was in a scene of pocahontas and painting with all the colors of the wind. the purple was moving towards the sky, and the sky was the pool. that's what lenny had told him, and rhett just nodded his head in agreement. he trusted the brunette boy. rhett squeezed lenny's arm as a form of encouragement. his face nearly lit up as the boy told a short story of the most beautiful person on earth he had encountered. rhett licked his lips and opened his mouth to speak, but only smiled instead. he didn't know why, but a wave of absolute joy washed over him as he listened to leonard talk about the beautiful brown hair and the skin like the moon. he himself had found a beautiful love, and he hated to hear that people didn't believe in it. rhett believed in it like it was a form of religion. love could make people do crazy things, but it was a hundred percent worth it in his eyes. “that is like….so beautiful, lenny.” rhett said in awe. “the moon? wow.” he was in such outstanding amazement that he hadn't even noticed lenny flopped back against the chair. the boy just sat in the other's lap and zoned out in front of him, thinking of his lover. he made a mental note to ask lenny about double-dating in the future. rhett was brought back when he felt len ruffling his hair. when he announced he had a story, rhett perked up and stared intently at lenny. what kind of love story did he want? he could think of so many great ones. stories he's read in english class or in poetry, or the kinds he's seen on television or in the movies. they all seemed so idealistic to him. there were so many wonderful ones that he couldn't seem to choose. “one where the boy and the girl run away and get married and make babies and hold each other in their arms all day long.” rhett beamed, suddenly seeing floating cartoon hearts all around he and lenny. “and they won't get bothered by people who don't like it and they'll just…have each other!” this was perfect. that was exactly what rhett wanted. to run away and be some place where he couldn't be bothered; where everything was beautiful and nothing hurt. “wh-when i get married, i'm inviting you to my wedding.” he mused out of the blue. “and these angels…the angels that were singing…they'll be playing at the reception. you'll love it!”for one reason or another, rhett found himself being absolutely captivated by lenny's face. he had nice pale skin that looked soft to touch, and his eyes — oh, his eyes! deep cerulean blues, but…wait. rhett squinted and leaned in towards lenny's face a little bit more. his eyes widened once he saw that there was a small ring of green circled around lenny's dark, enlarged pupils. what a beautiful sight! the blue and green colors were seemingly jumping out to rhett, almost as if they were three dimensional. the blonde's jaw dropped and he leaned back to get a full view of leonard's face. “lenny!” rhett exclaimed, shaking the boy a little bit. “your eyes! your eyes!” suddenly, he wanted to be lenny. “l-lenny, let me borrow your eyes! can i have them? please? let me have them for a day! i swear i'll bring them back!” he poked out his bottom lip. “i'll give you something of mine to prove i'll bring them back! you can trust me!” why in the fuck was rhett yelling?

"i know! yeah, exactly like the moon. on a night when the sky is otherwise completely dark…" lenny trailed off toward the end of his sentence, watching the yellows change into oranges as the passionate insistence in his voice increased, sinking back into a light lapse of thought. diana was beautiful. she was like this goddess of perfection who was going to be on a million magazine covers when she was older and he would just stand there and say, "yeah, i knew her." hopefully with the "knew" in the present tense. you know… like… know. lenny shook his head and tried to focus on rhett though. "but the glow isn't like an awkward glow. it's jusssst right. you know?"

was rhett thinking? lenny couldn't tell. he was aware of the fact that rhett was still sitting in his lap, if only because he could still feel his weight. but he couldn't tell anything else about what he was doing or what he was thinking. and jesus, what did that boy weigh? three hundred pounds? five? lenny had heard of physical properties of the world seeming to be distorted when people were using acid- now he got it. he wasn't sure if he would have been able to tell the difference between one and five or one and six, even if he'd used his fingers to count. besides, his fingers were all chubby and awkward and what? no wonder diana didn't like him back. his fingers were the size of a hamburger. she was beautiful and he was not. suddenly lenny felt sad. really sad. all of a sudden, the colors streaming around his head seemed more muted and less bright and vibrant. he was pulled back out of his own thoughts as rhett spoke again.

lenny was distracted momentarily by the fact that the color of the wisps coming out of the other boy's mouth had changed. they were no longer purple but had changed to a more blue hue, reflecting the sadness that he himself was now feeling. but the story that he was asking for was so beautiful and pretty. it was such a classic tale. it's what lenny wanted to have in his own life. he wanted to run away with somebody where nobody could bother him and everything was simple and he didn't have to be completely terrified by the fact that her dad was a senator and compared to him lenny was tinier than the smallest little ant, kind of like how small he felt right now in the big big world of color that he was currently experiencing. the whole getting married and making babies could wait. right now, he just wanted to have her. but even though he felt sad because that would never happen- lenny didn't know the first thing about eloping, where could he learn- the blonde on currently residing on top of him seemed to be so excited about it. maybe he had his own diana- because he definitely couldn't have lenny's! he wanted her all to himself and he was never selfish so he thought it would be okay if he just asked this one thing of the world, right?

"oh, i know a story like that," lenny replied, pointing to his head as if to show that he even remembered it, too. who didn't know a story like that? all the best ones were. "i don't know if i can tell it as nicely as you though. i mean, that was a great story right there and if the world were to end in five minutes, i wouldn't have the time to tell it and do it justice." the other boy's grin was infectious and lenny felt himself starting to smile despite his glum realization of his and diana's doomed love. he even started to grin widely when rhett invited him to his future wedding. lenny had never been to a wedding- the closest he'd come was when he watched kate and william get married on global tv. so it would be fun to actually go to one. especially if the angels sang! he heard them now, singing in lots of bright white light, giving everything around him a beautiful glow. "oh man, that'd be sick! thanks dude! i'm super excited. who's the lucky lady?" everybody had a lucky lady when they got married- or a lucky dude, whatever floated your boat. there was always somebody lucky involved.

lenny felt his eyes widen as rhett drew closer to his face, staring at him intently. what? did he have something on his face? rhett's eyes were big and lenny tried to remember ever having seen pupils as massive as the other boy's looked. oh. did his look like that? he blinked rapidly several times, as if that could erase whatever was going on in his eyeballs. "what?" he asked stupidly. he wasn't sure exactly how to react to rhett's close presence so he found himself staring back into rhett's eyes. he had nice eyes too, if you liked blue eyes. he didn't like blue eyes. he liked brown or hazel eyes. those were diana eyes. he liked diana eyes. wait. he had blue eyes. why did rhett want to trade eyes when they had the same ones? lenny was confused, unable to determine if this was actually happening or if it was all in his head. it was so loud, the way that rhett was talking that he was leaning towards fantasy- how else would they get away with yelling like this when they were in a public place like a pool? "w-wait, why do you want them? i've never given anybody my eyes before. c-can i have your hair? blonde hair is cool. right?"

/i'm sorry if this really sucks, my mind stalled. :c
